What is BIST 100 Index (XU100)?

The BIST 100 index is the core gauge used to measure the overall direction of the Borsa Istanbul equity market and is published under the code XU100. Its data history goes back to 1986, when the Istanbul Stock Exchange (IMKB) began operating; when the exchange was renamed Borsa Istanbul in 2013, index names carrying the IMKB prefix were changed to BIST.

Constituents are selected according to criteria such as free-float capitalization and trading volume and are reviewed periodically. Companies from a range of sectors, including banking, holdings, industry, energy, retail, transport and communications, sit in the same basket. XU100 is a capitalization-weighted price index; it is calculated in Turkish lira and its value is expressed in points.

Fund managers and individual investors use the BIST 100 index as a benchmark to compare portfolio returns, read the overall market trend and make comparisons with sector indices.
