Gold calculator guide

The gold calculator works out the value of the pure gold contained in gram gold, Turkish quarter, half, full, Republic and gremse coins and 22-carat bangles, using a sourced gram gold observation and the daily exchange rate. Below you will find the standards used in the calculation and why the result differs from a jeweller’s price.

The difference between 24-carat and 22-carat

Carat expresses the share of pure gold in an alloy. 24-carat gold is almost pure, while Turkish quarter, half, full and Republic coins are minted by the Turkish State Mint in a 22-carat alloy for durability. The pure gold inside a quarter coin therefore weighs less than the coin itself. The calculator uses the standard weight and purity of each product.

The gram gold formula

Gold is priced internationally in US dollars per troy ounce, and one troy ounce equals 31.1034768 grams. The lira value of gram gold is found by dividing the ounce price by that figure and multiplying the result by the USD/TRY rate. A product’s value is then its pure gold content in grams multiplied by the gram gold value.

Mint workmanship charge and jeweller margin

Minted coins such as the quarter and the Republic coin carry a workmanship charge that reflects the cost of minting, and jewellers also apply a spread between their buying and selling prices. These items are not part of the calculation. Older and newer coins, as well as worn pieces, can also trade at different prices in the market.

Using the calculator

In the single-type view, choose one kind of gold and enter a quantity; in the gold basket view, enter how many pieces of each type you hold to see their combined metal value. For the pure gold content of each product see the Turkish gold coin value page, and for price history the gram gold and gold ounce pages.
