39 assetsAbout stock market indices
This page lists BIST 100, S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 and other stock indices in points. Index values are not converted into any currency. Borsa Istanbul indices are delayed by at least 15 minutes; the observation time of other indices is shown on each row.
What is an index?
A stock index sums up the combined change in value of a basket of shares, selected under set rules, as a single number. BIST 100 is made up of large and liquid companies on Borsa Istanbul, S&P 500 of large US companies, and Nasdaq 100 of large non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq exchange. The index itself cannot be bought or sold; funds and futures that track it trade separately.
Why points are not converted into a currency
An index value is not a price but an indicator scaled to a base date, so converting points into dollars or lira would not be meaningful. When comparing indices, look at the percentage change over the same period rather than the level in points. The asset comparison tool does this from a common starting point.
Weighting and constituent changes
In most indices a company’s weight is based on its free-float market value, so moves in large companies affect the index more. Constituents are reviewed at set intervals, and companies can be added or removed. Long-term charts include the effect of these changes.
Reading index closes
Each index is calculated during the trading hours of its exchange; when the exchange is closed, the last closing value is shown with its date. Asian, European and US indices close at different times, so allow for the time difference when comparing moves on the same day. Opening and closing times are listed in Türkiye time on the trading hours page.
