About the Fear and Greed Index

What does the index measure?

The Fear and Greed Index sums up overall sentiment in the Bitcoin market as a single score between zero and one hundred. Low scores indicate that fear dominates, high scores that greed does, and the band in between is considered neutral. Because the index reduces market psychology to one figure, it is usually read together with the price chart. The score and past observations on this page are taken daily from Alternative.me, which publishes the index.

What goes into the score?

The publisher states that it combines price volatility, market momentum and volume, social media activity, Bitcoin’s share of the total crypto market and search trends. The weights of the components and their data sources are set out in the publisher’s methodology note, and the publisher may change them over time, which matters for long-term comparisons. Lzzo.com does not recalculate the score; it shows the published value with its date.

Reading the index

The index is a measure of sentiment, not a signal to buy or sell. It can stay in an extreme zone for a long time and may not change direction on the same day as the price. It represents the Bitcoin market only and does not reflect Borsa Istanbul or other global markets. If the source has an outage, the last score received is kept with its date.

Learning simulator

In the simulator on this page you choose the score yourself; it is there to show what each zone means and does not produce a real index value. The actual score and past observations appear in the gauge above it. To look at Bitcoin’s price history, see the Bitcoin page.
