What is Dow Jones Industrial Average (Dow Jones 30)?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average is a US stock index first published in 1896 and now calculated by S&P Dow Jones Indices. In Turkey it is often called the Dow Jones 30, because the index consists of the shares of thirty well-established, widely recognized companies. The word 'industrial' in its name is a historical legacy; today's constituents are spread across sectors as varied as technology, finance, health care and retail.
What sets the Dow Jones apart from other widely followed indices is its price weighting. A company with a higher share price has more say in the index, regardless of its size. To preserve the continuity of the series through stock splits and constituent changes, a coefficient known as the 'Dow divisor' is used, and the index level is calculated with this divisor.
Thanks to its long history, it is a frequently used yardstick for historical comparisons of the US stock market. Lzzo.com shows the index value in points using Yahoo Finance data; this value is not a share or fund price and may not match the prices of financial products linked to the index.
