How the Grand Bazaar price differs from the gold content value
In the Grand Bazaar, products such as quarter, half, full and Republic coins trade at the buying and selling prices of jewellers, which vary from one jeweller to another and through the day. The value on this page is different: it is the worth of the pure gold a product contains, calculated from the ounce gold price and the USD/TRY rate. The model leaves out the minting premium, workmanship and the buy-sell spread.
How is the gold content value calculated?
Each product has a known gross weight and fineness under the Turkish State Mint standard. Multiplying weight by fineness gives the grams of pure gold in the product. That amount is then valued with the ounce price converted to grams and the USD/TRY rate to reach a lira value. The table lists weight and fineness, pure gold grams, and the lira and dollar values in separate columns.
How many grams of gold is a quarter coin?
The answer is the product’s gross weight multiplied by its fineness; the result is the gold content, meaning the grams of pure gold it contains. The table gives the pure gold grams of the quarter, half, full and Republic coins in a column of their own. Your own item’s certificate, wear or year of minting is not taken into account, and for crafted items such as bangles and jewellery the workmanship charge is usually not recovered when selling.
Why there is no buy or sell price
Jeweller and bank prices add a minting premium, workmanship and a buy-sell spread. These differ by institution, product and time of day and are not shown because they are not observed on the site. The amount you receive when selling a quarter coin, or pay when buying one, will therefore differ from the model value.
How the ounce price and the exchange rate affect it
The model value depends on two separate inputs: the international ounce price and the USD/TRY rate. With the ounce price unchanged, a higher exchange rate raises the value; with the rate unchanged, a fall in the ounce price lowers it. Both reference values are shown alongside the table, and the detailed rules are on the data methodology page.
