Turkish Gold Coins: Weight and Gold Content

In short

Turkish gold coins are the quarter, half, full and Republic gold coins struck by the Turkish Mint; each has a fixed weight in 22 carat gold, so its gold content is the weight times the fineness.

The Turkish Mint strikes Republic gold coins in two series: a jewellery series, known as ziynet coins, and a coin series, known as Republic or Ata coins. Both are 22 carat, with a fineness of about 916 parts per thousand, and each series comes in five sizes. The jewellery series weighs 1.754 grams for the quarter, 3.508 grams for the half, 7.016 grams for the full coin and 17.54 grams for the two-and-a-half size. The coin series is slightly heavier: its full Republic coin weighs 7.216 grams.

The gold content of a coin is its weight multiplied by its fineness. A quarter ziynet coin of 1.754 grams at a fineness of 0.916 contains about 1.607 grams of pure gold, and a full Republic coin of 7.216 grams contains about 6.610 grams. A fineness of 22 carat is 22 parts in 24; the Mint states it as 916.6 parts per thousand, so a calculation with 0.916 differs from the stated figure in the fourth digit.

A coin's market price in lira is higher than its gold content: dealers add workmanship, a premium and a buying and selling spread, and the premium varies with the coin and with demand. The gold content therefore serves as a reference value and not as a price. Older coins, foreign coins and bangles differ in weight and fineness, and a jeweller's weights can deviate slightly from the Mint's standard.

Formula

Fine gold (grams) = coin weight (grams) * fineness
Gold content value (TRY) = fine gold (grams) * gram gold price (TRY)

The formula is shown as code; N stands for the number of bars or periods.

How Lzzo.com shows it

The gold pages list the quarter, half, full and Republic coins and the 22 carat bangle as gold-content models: weight times fineness times the gram gold price, with no workmanship, premium or dealer spread. The weights and fineness it uses are those above and are shown on each product page. The result is a calculated value and not a jeweller's or Grand Bazaar price.
