About gold and commodity prices
This page shows the latest observed prices of ounce gold, silver, oil and other commodities with their source and time. Values for gram gold and the Turkish quarter and Republic coins come from a gold-content model calculated from the ounce price and the exchange rate; jeweller prices, workmanship and buy-sell spreads are not included.
How is a commodity price set?
Commodities such as oil, natural gas, copper and wheat are mostly priced on futures exchanges through standard contracts for delivery on a set date. The value in the list is usually the price of the contract closest to expiry. The price for physical delivery can differ because of transport, quality and regional factors. When a contract expires, the price rolls over to the next one, which can create small jumps on the chart.
Why gram gold depends on two inputs
Internationally, gold is priced in US dollars per troy ounce. The lira value of gram gold depends on both that ounce price and the USD/TRY rate: even when the ounce price stays flat, a rise in the exchange rate pushes gram gold up. The steps of the calculation are explained on the gold calculator page.
Model value and jeweller price
Turkish quarter, half, full and Republic coins are minted to standard weights in a 22-carat alloy. The model gives the value of the pure gold they contain. Jewellers and banks add workmanship, a minting premium and a buy-sell spread; these vary by institution and by day and are not shown on the site. See the Turkish gold coin value page for the weight and purity of each product.
Precious metals, energy and agriculture
Silver, platinum and palladium belong to the precious metals group; crude oil, natural gas and fuels to energy; and products such as wheat, corn and coffee to agriculture. These commodities are generally priced in US dollars and shown in dollars on the list; products such as gram gold are quoted in lira. Supply disruptions, inventory data, seasonal demand and the general direction of the dollar are among the main influences on their prices.
