How to use the financial calculators

The tools page brings together currency and gold converters, comparison and analysis tools, and return and risk calculators. The label on each card states which data the tool uses: a reference rate, real price history, daily index data or the values you enter.

Observation-based and assumption-based calculations

The currency converter and the gold calculator use the latest rate and price observations from their sources. The dollar-cost averaging and asset comparison tools work with real historical closing prices and produce no result when there is not enough history. The compound return, pivot point and position size tools rely entirely on the values you enter, so their results should be read as a scenario.

Which tool answers which question?

To find what an amount is worth in another currency, use the currency converter; to value the gold you hold, the gold calculator; to see what would have happened had you bought the same amount every month, the dollar-cost averaging calculator; and to measure how much you put at risk on a trade, the position size tool.

Interpreting the results

Calculations based on past data show what happened in the past, not future returns. Bank charges, taxes, trading fees and buy-sell spreads are not included. The source, period and method are stated on each tool’s own page; when you note down a result, it helps to record that information with it. No account or sign-up is needed to use the tools.

Moving between tools and method notes

A strip on every tool page links to the other tools and to the asset comparison page. The data sources and calculation rules used across the tools are explained together on the data methodology page; when you compare a result with another source, these notes help explain any difference.
