What is Aluminum Spot (ALI)?
Aluminum is a base metal used in transport, construction, packaging, power transmission lines and consumer goods because it is light, resists corrosion and is easy to work. Bauxite ore is first converted into alumina and then into metal through electrolysis. Because the electrolysis stage requires a great deal of energy, electricity prices play a decisive role in production costs.
China holds a heavy share of global production; India, Russia, Canada and the Gulf countries are also among the significant producers. Energy prices, China's policies on production capacity, trade restrictions and demand from the automotive and construction sectors are the main factors affecting the price. Because aluminum is a recyclable metal, scrap supply also plays a role in the market.
The international reference price for aluminum is largely formed on the London Metal Exchange. The value shown on Lzzo.com, however, is based on COMEX aluminum futures (ALI=F) data obtained via Yahoo Finance; futures prices do not include physical delivery premiums or regional differences.
