What Is USD/TRY? The Dollar-Lira Rate
In short
USD/TRY states how many Turkish liras one US dollar costs; the dollar is the base currency of the pair and the lira is the quote currency.
In USD/TRY the US dollar is the base currency and the Turkish lira, whose ISO code is TRY, is the quote currency. A reading of the pair is the number of liras that one dollar costs, so a rising USD/TRY means that the lira buys fewer dollars and a falling one means that it buys more. In everyday language it is the dollar rate or the dollar-lira rate.
Several rates for the same pair exist at the same time. Market quotes for USD/TRY are produced continuously by banks and trading platforms, with a spread between the buying and the selling price. The Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye publishes indicative exchange rates on business days; they are derived from interbank market quotes and announced for information, and they are not a price at which a customer can transact. Exchange offices, banks and the Grand Bazaar apply their own buying and selling prices.
Many forces shape the pair: monetary policy and interest rates in Turkey and in the United States, inflation differentials, the current account, reserves and capital flows, as well as the general strength of the dollar. The pair is also an input for other lira prices: the lira value of gold, of a US-listed share or of a dollar-denominated crypto asset all depend on USD/TRY, so a move in the rate can change a lira price even when the price in dollars has not moved.
How Lzzo.com shows it
The USD/TRY page shows the pair as a rate and not as a price in a currency, with the time of the last observation; it is a reference rate and not a bank price. The same rate converts dollar-based values into lira on Lzzo.com: the values of gram, quarter and Republic gold are calculated from the ounce price and USD/TRY, and a conversion is marked as approximate.
