What is KOSPI Index (KOSPI)?
KOSPI (Korea Composite Stock Price Index) is a composite index covering all common shares traded on the main market of the Korea Exchange (KRX). The index is weighted by company value and uses the level at the start of 1980 as its base. Unlike its narrower sub-indices, it reflects the main market as a whole. The Korea Exchange is the institution that brings the stock and derivatives markets under one roof.
Because the South Korean economy relies on export-driven sectors such as electronics, semiconductors, automotive, shipbuilding and chemicals, KOSPI is followed as one of the sensitive gauges of global trade and the technology cycle. The weight of a few technology companies in the index can leave the overall level dependent on their performance.
Bank of Korea interest rate policy, the value of the won and foreign investors' portfolio flows are among the factors affecting KOSPI. On Lzzo.com, the KOSPI Index is shown in points using Yahoo Finance data; the value is not a share price or an amount in won.
