What is Hang Seng Index (Hang Seng)?
The Hang Seng Index is a stock index reflecting the performance of large, liquid companies traded on the Hong Kong stock exchange (HKEX). It is calculated by Hang Seng Indexes Company, a subsidiary of Hang Seng Bank, and has been published since 1969. The index takes its name from the bank that developed it.
Constituents are spread across areas such as finance, property, technology and energy; in recent years the weight of mainland Chinese companies in the index has risen markedly. For this reason, the Hang Seng is read as a gauge both of the Hong Kong economy and of international investors' view of China. Because the Hong Kong dollar is managed under a currency system pegged to the US dollar, US interest rates also directly affect local financing conditions.
Economic data from China, regulatory decisions and global risk appetite are the main drivers of the index. The Hang Seng value on Lzzo.com is in points and is based on Yahoo Finance data; it should not be confused with the prices of funds that track the index.
