What is IBEX 35 Index (IBEX 35)?
The IBEX 35 is the index made up of the shares of companies with high trading volumes on Spanish stock exchanges. Launched in 1992, the index is calculated by BME (Bolsas y Mercados Españoles), part of the Swiss SIX group. The number in the index's name refers to its number of constituents. Constituents are weighted by their free-float shares, and the index is used to sum up the general direction of the Spanish stock market. Futures and options contracts based on the index are also available.
Banking, energy, utilities, telecommunications and construction companies form the backbone of the index. Because of Spanish banks' operations in Latin America, the IBEX 35 can also be affected by the region's currencies and economic developments. Constituents are reviewed regularly by a technical advisory committee.
Eurozone interest rate decisions, Spain's growth and employment data and tourism income are taken into account when following the index. On Lzzo.com, the IBEX 35 is shown in points using Yahoo Finance data; the index is not a share price.
