What is Swiss Market Index (SMI) (SMI)?

The Swiss Market Index (SMI) is a stock index made up of large, liquid Swiss companies traded on the SIX Swiss Exchange. Launched in 1988, the index is calculated by SIX. The SMI is a price index, meaning dividends paid by companies are not added to the index level. Constituents are selected according to rules based on liquidity and free float.

Pharmaceutical, food, financial and industrial companies hold a prominent place in the index. Because of the weight of a few large health care and food companies, the SMI is seen as an index weighted toward defensive sectors; in periods of economic turbulence, this structure can set its behavior apart from other European indices. Any single company's weight is limited by a cap.

The path of the Swiss franc can affect the competitiveness of Swiss exporters and the index's performance, so the Swiss National Bank's monetary policy is also closely watched. On Lzzo.com, the SMI value is shown in points using Yahoo Finance data.
