What is S&P/ASX 200 Index (S&P/ASX 200)?
The S&P/ASX 200 is an index made up of large, liquid companies traded on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). Calculated by S&P Dow Jones Indices, the index began publication in 2000 and has become one of the main benchmarks for institutional investors in Australia.
Banks, mining companies, and health care and retail companies stand out in the index. Because exports of iron ore and other minerals are decisive for the Australian economy, commodity prices and demand from China can influence the index's direction. The weight of banking stocks also makes local interest rate conditions especially important for the index. The composition is reviewed quarterly, with additions and removals based on company size and liquidity criteria.
Reserve Bank of Australia decisions and the path of the Australian dollar are also watched. On Lzzo.com, the S&P/ASX 200 is shown in points using Yahoo Finance data; prices of funds and futures based on the index differ from this value.
