What is CAC 40 Index (CAC 40)?
The CAC 40 is a stock index made up of prominent French companies traded on Euronext Paris. Its name comes from the Paris bourse's former electronic trading system, 'Cotation Assistée en Continu'. The index uses the end of 1987 as its base and is calculated by Euronext. Many internationally recognized French companies are among its constituents.
Sectors such as luxury goods, energy, aerospace, banking and health care carry significant weight in the index. Constituents are weighted by their free-float shares, and any single company's weight is limited by a cap. The composition is reviewed regularly by an independent committee.
Because a large share of French companies' income comes from abroad, the CAC 40 is also sensitive to global demand and the value of the euro. European Central Bank interest rate decisions and developments in France's public finances are among the other factors affecting the index. On Lzzo.com, the value is shown in points using Yahoo Finance data.
