What is Dogecoin (DOGE)?
Dogecoin is a cryptocurrency launched as a joke in 2013, inspired by the popular Shiba Inu dog meme, that over time gained a broad community. DOGE is the native coin produced on its own blockchain. Its codebase is based on Litecoin, and therefore on Bitcoin; it has become known for its use in sending tips, small payments and community donation campaigns.
The network runs on proof of work using the same Scrypt algorithm as Litecoin, and merged mining with Litecoin is possible, so miners can secure both networks with the same computing power. Blocks are produced more frequently than on Bitcoin. Dogecoin has no upper limit on total supply; a fixed amount of new DOGE is minted in each block, meaning supply grows by the same absolute amount every year. The ecosystem is supported by volunteer structures such as the Dogecoin Foundation.
The Dogecoin price may be more sensitive to the social media agenda, posts by public figures, news of its acceptance as a payment option and general risk appetite than to its technical use cases. The DOGE price seen on Lzzo.com is taken from the DOGE/USDT pair on Binance and converted into dollars at Coinbase Exchange's USDT/USD rate; the chart also reflects this dollar-based series.
