What is Solana (SOL)?
Solana is a layer-one blockchain that began operating in 2020 with its mainnet beta and aims for high transaction capacity and low fees. The network uses Proof of History, a mechanism that cryptographically timestamps the order of events, together with proof-of-stake-based consensus. Its runtime, called Sealevel, executes transactions that do not touch one another at the same time, using hardware resources in parallel. Smart contracts on Solana are called programs and are usually written in the Rust language.
SOL is Solana's native token; it is used to pay transaction fees and is staked with validators to secure the network. Users who stake receive a share of inflation-funded rewards. The ecosystem hosts a broad range of applications, including decentralized exchanges, stablecoin transfers, NFTs and payment apps. The network's development is supported by the Solana Foundation and independent client teams; alternative validator clients such as Firedancer aim to reduce dependence on a single piece of software.
