What Is the BIST 30 Index?

In short

The BIST 30 is the Borsa Istanbul index of 30 shares from the Star Market, the highest-ranked group of the same ranking that fills the BIST 50 and the BIST 100.

The BIST 30 consists of 30 shares selected from the companies traded on the Star Market of Borsa Istanbul. It is the narrowest of the three headline indices that share one ranking: the highest-ranked shares form the BIST 30, the next group is added to make the BIST 50, and a larger group completes the BIST 100. Each of the wider indices therefore contains the shares of the narrower ones.

The ranking looks at two measures over the review period, average free-float market value and daily average traded value, and combines them, so a share needs both size and trading activity to rank high. Shares must also have traded for a minimum period. Weights follow free-float market value, and Borsa Istanbul also calculates versions of the BIST 30 with weight limits, which cap the share that any single company can have in the index.

The BIST 30 is often used as a reference for the large-company, most actively traded part of the Turkish equity market, and funds and derivatives are linked to it. Because it is a subset of the BIST 100 and is concentrated in fewer shares, the two indices move similarly but not identically. Its value, like that of any index, is a number of points and not the price of a share.
