Vanguard Real Estate ETF

The Vanguard Real Estate ETF is an exchange-traded fund that invests in US real estate companies and trades on US exchanges under the ticker VNQ. According to Vanguard, the fund tracks a version of MSCI's US investable real estate index that limits the weight of any single company (MSCI US Investable Market Real Estate).

The index consists mainly of equity real estate investment trusts (REITs); real estate development and services companies may also be included. The portfolio spans different property types such as data centers, communication towers, logistics warehouses, residential complexes, healthcare facilities, shopping centers, office buildings and storage facilities. The fund is passively managed and uses a full replication approach that tries to hold all the companies in the index in the same proportions. Because REITs are required to distribute most of the income they earn from rents, the fund makes periodic distributions.
