What is Euro / Swiss Franc (EUR/CHF)?
EUR/CHF shows how many Swiss francs one euro is worth. Although surrounded by eurozone countries, Switzerland keeps its own currency and conducts a large share of its foreign trade with these countries. EUR/CHF is therefore a critical rate for the Swiss economy and the Swiss National Bank (SNB).
The franc is a safe-haven currency sought in times of uncertainty; when crises hit Europe, EUR/CHF usually falls, meaning the franc gains value. To limit this effect, the SNB applied a floor against the euro between 2011 and 2015. When the floor was removed in January 2015, the franc appreciated sharply within a short time; the episode is a frequently cited example of how central bank intervention affects exchange rates.
ECB and SNB interest rate decisions, political developments in the eurozone and global risk perception drive the pair. Lzzo.com shows a cross reference rate for EUR/CHF calculated from market exchange rates; it is not a bank buy/sell price.
