What is Horizen (ZEN)?
Horizen is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency project launched in 2017 under the name ZenCash and based on Zcash technology in its early years. The project later took the name Horizen and turned to developing sidechain infrastructure and scalable application chains. For a long time, the network ran on independent node infrastructure and mining.
In 2025 Horizen moved the ZEN token to Base, the network developed by Coinbase, with the aim of building an infrastructure layer on Base for privacy-focused applications; CoinGecko's listing shows ZEN contracts on both the Base and Horizen networks. ZEN is used in the ecosystem for functions such as governance, staking and network fees. This transition marks the project's shift from a standalone mainnet model to a structure built on an existing ecosystem.
On Lzzo.com, the Horizen price is shown by converting the Binance ZEN/USDT pair to US dollars using Coinbase Exchange's USDT/USD observation. The identifier on CoinGecko reflects the project's former name.
