What is PayPal USD (PYUSD)?
PayPal USD is a stablecoin launched in August 2023 by payments company PayPal and intended to be pegged to the US dollar. The token is issued on PayPal's behalf by Paxos Trust Company, which is subject to New York State regulation. What sets PYUSD apart from an ordinary crypto asset is its integration with the PayPal and Venmo apps, where eligible users can convert directly to and from dollars within the app.
The stablecoin follows a fiat-reserve model: the tokens in circulation are backed by US dollar deposits, short-term U.S. Treasury bills and similar cash equivalents, and Paxos publishes regular reports on the reserve composition. The one-to-one dollar peg is a design goal; factors such as issuer risk, regulatory developments and exchange liquidity can cause the price to deviate briefly.
PYUSD was first issued on Ethereum and then expanded to networks such as Solana, Arbitrum and Stellar. The PayPal USD price on Lzzo.com is based on DefiLlama's US dollar reference data and is tracked for information only.
