What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether is a stablecoin designed to be pegged one-to-one to the US dollar and launched in 2014. USDT is issued by the company Tether, which states that it holds reserves against tokens in circulation and discloses the reserve breakdown through periodic attestation reports prepared by an independent accounting firm. According to these reports, a significant share of the reserves consists of short-term US Treasury bills; items such as cash equivalents, gold and Bitcoin also appear in the reports.
USDT was first issued on the Omni layer built on Bitcoin and then spread to many networks such as Tron, Ethereum, Solana, TON, Aptos and Avalanche; DefiLlama also shows the token circulating on many chains. Verified institutional customers can mint or redeem USDT directly with Tether against dollars. Holding the dollar peg is a design goal; the composition of the reserves, the issuer's financial condition and legal regulations can affect the price on the secondary market.
