What is USDC?
USDC is a dollar stablecoin launched in 2018 and issued by US-based Circle. The aim is for each USDC to be backed by reserves of cash and short-term US Treasury assets held by Circle and to be redeemable for dollars. The bulk of the reserves is held in a US-registered money market fund managed by BlackRock; the reserve composition is disclosed through regular reports.
USDC exists natively on Ethereum, Solana, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, Avalanche, Stellar and many other networks. Circle also operates a transfer protocol that moves USDC between networks by burning and re-minting tokens. The stablecoin is widely used in payments, exchange trading, international transfers and decentralized finance applications. Circle also issues USDC in the European Union under the MiCA regulation; the company's shares have traded on the New York Stock Exchange since 2025.
The dollar peg is a design goal: in early 2023, USDC briefly lost its peg because part of the reserves was held at a US bank that collapsed. On Lzzo.com, the USDC value is a US dollar reference derived from the Binance USDT pair.
