What is Litecoin (LTC)?
Litecoin is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency launched in 2011 as a derivative of Bitcoin's open-source code. LTC is the native coin of the Litecoin network. From the outset, the project has been positioned as a lighter alternative to Bitcoin for low-fee, quickly confirmed everyday payments.
Unlike Bitcoin, Litecoin uses the Scrypt mining algorithm and produces blocks at shorter intervals. Its total supply is set by a fixed cap; the block reward halves at set intervals (halving). The network is known for trying out some technical innovations before Bitcoin: it activated SegWit early, supported Lightning Network payments and in 2022 rolled out the MimbleWimble Extension Blocks (MWEB) upgrade, which offers optional privacy. The ability to merge-mine with Dogecoin, which uses the same algorithm, is also part of the network's security structure.
The LTC price is closely tied to its level of acceptance among payment services and exchanges, halving cycles, miner profitability and Bitcoin's general trend. The Litecoin price on Lzzo.com is calculated from the LTC/USDT pair traded on Binance and converted into its dollar equivalent at Coinbase Exchange's USDT/USD rate; the chart also tracks this dollar series.
