What is Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC)?
Marathon Petroleum Corporation is a US refining and petroleum products company headquartered in Findlay, Ohio. Its shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker MPC, and the company is included in the S&P 500 index. It became an independent company in 2011 when it separated from Marathon Oil.
The refining business consists of plants that turn crude oil into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and petrochemical feedstocks; these plants are located mainly in the US Gulf Coast, Midwest and West Coast regions. Pipelines, storage and gathering infrastructure are run through MPLX, a partnership controlled by the company. Fuel is also sold to Marathon-branded stations; the Speedway fuel stations were sold in 2021 to the Japan-based Seven & i group.
