The company was formed in 1980 through the merger of Chessie System and Seaboard Coast Line Industries, while the roots of its rail subsidiary CSX Transportation go back to some of the first American railroads of the 1800s. Its shares trade on Nasdaq under the ticker CSX. The company is included in the Nasdaq-100 and in the S&P 500.
CSX operates a rail network that connects major cities, ports and industrial regions in the eastern United States. The cargo it carries includes coal, chemicals, automobiles and auto parts, agricultural products, construction materials and intermodal containers. In intermodal services, containers are transferred between rail, trucks and ships.
