State Street Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF

XLU, currently named State Street Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF, is an exchange-traded fund focused on the US utilities sector. The fund, which was called Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund until December 2025, trades on NYSE Arca.

According to the issuer, the fund's objective is to correspond generally, before expenses, to the price and yield performance of the Utilities Select Sector Index; this index represents the utilities portion of S&P's broad index of large US companies. The sub-sectors it covers are electric utilities, water utilities, multi-utilities that provide both electricity and gas, independent power and renewable electricity producers, and natural gas distribution companies. Most of these companies operate as regional monopolies, and their rates are approved by state regulators.

Utility stocks have traditionally been sensitive to interest rates because of their regular dividends; recently, the rising electricity needs of data centers, grid investment and demand for nuclear and natural gas plants have also entered the fund's agenda. The fund's market price can briefly differ from its net asset value (NAV).
