What is ZKsync Era (ZK)?
ZKsync Era is a zero-knowledge rollup (ZK rollup) network developed by Matter Labs, with its mainnet opened in March 2023. Transactions are executed in batches outside Ethereum, and cryptographic proofs confirming their correctness are then submitted to Ethereum. This lowers transaction costs while anchoring security in Ethereum.
The ZK token was distributed through an airdrop in June 2024 and is used for governance of the ZKsync ecosystem. ZKsync also develops the ZK Stack software framework, which lets different projects set up their own chains; the network formed by these chains makes up the ZKsync ecosystem. The token is available on Ethereum and ZKsync Era. The network also hosts real-world asset applications such as tokenized private credit products.
Demand for Ethereum layer-two networks, the use of applications in the ecosystem and governance decisions can affect the value of ZK. On Lzzo.com, the ZKsync price is shown by converting the Binance ZK/USDT pair to US dollars using Coinbase's USDT/USD observation.
