Worldcoin

Worldcoin is an identity and finance network project developed by the company Tools for Humanity and renamed World in 2024. At the centre of the project is World ID, which aims to verify, using privacy-preserving methods, that a user is a real and unique human. Verification is carried out with a dedicated device called the Orb, which processes an image of the iris. The WLD token launched in July 2023.

WLD was issued as a token on the Ethereum and Optimism networks; the project also operates a layer-two network called World Chain that gives priority to verified human users. The token is used for network governance and for incentives in the ecosystem. The project's method of collecting biometric data has been the subject of reviews and restriction decisions by data protection authorities in some countries.
