Xcel Energy Inc. is an electricity and natural gas utility company headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The company was formed in 2000 through the merger of Northern States Power and New Century Energies. Its shares trade on Nasdaq under the ticker XEL, and the company is a member of the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 indices.
The group supplies electricity and natural gas across the upper Midwest and the southwest of the United States through four regulated operating companies: Northern States Power Minnesota, Northern States Power Wisconsin, Public Service Company of Colorado and Southwestern Public Service Company. Wind energy holds an important place in the generation portfolio, since the states it serves have favorable wind resources. Natural gas, coal, nuclear and solar power are also part of the mix. The company shares publicly its goals for cutting carbon emissions from its electricity system.
