What is Abbott Laboratories (ABT)?
Abbott Laboratories is a US health care products company headquartered in Abbott Park, Illinois, and founded in 1888. Its shares trade on the NYSE under the ticker ABT and are included in S&P's broad-based US stock index. In 2013 the company separated its research-based pharmaceutical business as AbbVie, which became an independent company.
Abbott operates in four main areas. The Medical Devices segment includes FreeStyle Libre continuous glucose monitoring systems, heart and vascular devices and neuromodulation products. The Diagnostics segment offers laboratory and rapid testing systems. The Established Pharmaceuticals segment sells branded generic medicines in emerging markets. The Nutrition segment includes Similac infant formula along with products such as Ensure and PediaSure.
