BIST Information Technology Index

The BIST Information Technology index is a gauge calculated under the code XBLSM that covers companies falling within the IT field in Borsa Istanbul's sector classification. Companies that develop software, provide corporate information technology solutions, distribute IT hardware or offer systems integration services may be part of this group. The broader BIST Technology index, by contrast, tracks IT companies together with defense technology companies.

According to Borsa Istanbul's rule set, sector indices consist of the shares of companies traded on the Star Market, Main Market and Sub-Market. A company whose field of activity changes, and whose sector therefore changes, is removed from its old sector index and added to the new one after the start of its new activity is announced on the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP). On its index card, XBLSM is defined as a capitalization-weighted price index without weight caps; its value is calculated on a Turkish lira basis and published in points.

Those following IT shares assess public and private sector digitalization budgets, software exports, the trend in licence and subscription models, exchange rates and the cost of skilled labour. Because no weight cap applies, price moves in companies with a high free-float value are reflected more strongly in the index level.
