The company became independent in 2001 after separating from the data processing firm National Data Corporation.
Global Payments provides the technology that lets businesses accept card and digital payments. Payment terminals and point-of-sale software for physical stores, payment infrastructure for online sales and business management software are the main parts of its activities. In January 2026 the company bought Worldpay to grow its payment acceptance business and handed its business serving card issuers, formerly known as TSYS, to Fidelity National Information Services.
