What is American International Group, Inc. (AIG)?
American International Group, Inc., known as AIG, is a US insurance company headquartered in New York; its roots go back to an insurance business founded in Shanghai in 1919. Its shares trade on the NYSE under the ticker AIG and are included in S&P's broad-based US stock index. Today the company works mainly in commercial and corporate insurance.
AIG's General Insurance segment covers property and liability insurance as well as products in financial lines, aviation, energy and other specialty lines. The segment includes North American and international commercial insurance along with travel and accident products for individuals. The life and retirement business was moved into a separate company under Corebridge Financial, which was floated in 2022. AIG's present structure therefore concentrates more on large-scale commercial insurance that takes on risk.
